Today, there are numerous state school laws being violated by public schools. For example, for years schools have been using Common Core in classrooms though it was repealed from law and supposedly removed from Oklahoma State teaching standards in 2014/2015. Now it's the teaching of racism through Critical Theory, made illegal by HB1775 during the 2021 legislative session - as well as schools forcing students to wear masks though prohibited by SB658, also passed on behalf of parents this year.
But it's not just what's being taught that's the problem, it's what's being taught without parents knowing.
For years I've described awful complaints from parents about what's being taught in public schools. The number of inappropriate books being assigned students in public schools is so rampant that I devoted an entire article in the Federalist about the issue.
Because we've all been bombarded with images of completely inappropriate materials being used for public education - especially during the plandemic (all I had to do was search the words "zoom classes inappropriate teaching" to get an eyeful of examples) - it's even more important now for OKLAHOMA PARENTS TO EXERT THEIR PARENTAL RIGHTS.
FOUR STATE LAWS TO USE TO YOUR BENEFIT
1. Title 25-2002 - Oklahoma Parental Rights - repeats a large chunk of the rights parents have according to Natural Law and includes this statement: All parental rights are reserved to a parent of a minor child without obstruction or interference from this state, any political subdivision of this state, any other governmental entity or any other institution...
2. Title 25-2003 - School District Policy On Parental Involvement - outlines the rights parents have to see the materials being used to teach their child and the mechanism by which parents can force the school to provide materials to them.
3. Title 70-11-103.3 - AIDS Education - which allows public schools to teach about AIDS - also says this: The program of AIDS prevention education shall teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain means for the prevention of the spread or contraction of the AIDS virus through sexual contact. It shall also teach that artificial means of birth control are not a certain means of preventing the spread of the AIDS virus and reliance on such methods puts a person at risk for exposure to the disease.
It also makes clear that parents have all access to ALL AIDS materials used to educate the student.
4. Title 70-11-105.1 - Sex Education - Approval of Curriculum and Materials. This law says superintendents SHALL: provide prior written notification to the parents or guardians of the students involved of their right to inspect the curriculum and material and of their obligation to notify the school in writing if they do not want their child to participate in the class, program, test, survey or questionnaire.
How many parents have been notified by your superintendent about the use of sex education materials? We KNOW that CDC Youth Risk Surveillance System surveys (and others) have been given in middle schools for decades without notice to parents and these are horrible.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT SCHOOL VIOLATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS
I wrote a blog recently about how to tackle the problem with Critical Race Theory using the Oklahoma State Department of Education's own formula for reporting BULLYING! Check that out here. Try using that tactic for that issue.
For this and all other issues, I've put together several letters for you to copy and use, but please know - unless you go to your county's District Attorney and ask them to prosecute (which, sadly, isn't likely as we found out with Common Core violations) - or you find an attorney who will sue the school on your behalf (and we hope to find an attorney willing to sue on behalf of violations of parents rights) - you'll have to stick on your school's administration like glue. Attend school board meetings, preferably with other parents to speak on the same topic - a crowd is always much more impressive than a lone individual and go to class with your child if you have to. And, as we've always said - RUN FOR YOUR SCHOOL BOARD.
Letter 1: Provide this letter to either your Principal and/or Superintendent in order to request documentation of the policies created by that school regarding access to information - or to obtain information.
Letter 2: Provide this letter to either your Principal and/or Superintendent if either your first letter was ignored, or you were issued a denial of information.
Again, please note - if your school's answer to your request/s is a big middle finger, you'll HAVE to call your County DA and that might not produce results either. STILL, you MUST keep trying. The reasons we have the problems we have with public education today is that parents have LET THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOLS PUSH THEM AROUND. Stop doing that!
YOU are the boss. They are YOUR schools and YOUR kids! Do what you have to do to make them work for YOU!
